10 Schritte zu einer günstigeren Städtereise10 steps to book a cheaper city trip

Hmm also warum nicht?

So entstand meine Route.

2 (1 von 1)You have itchy feet but no money? Your heart screams for adventure but you spent your last salary to fix your car? Or maybe you pay your rent by yourself but you are a student?

Then I got you covered. Here are 10 of my tips that will help you, to book a cheap city trip.

10 (1 von 1)

1. Have no fix destionation

Best would be if you start completely aimless, without a concrete destination in your mind. Check constantly the booking pages and just type in your current favorite destination. You will be surprised how cheap it can be. Pages like Travelpirates, Holidayguru, Travelbird or Travelzoo will already check the best deals for you. If you type into skyscanner the departure airport and as Destination „anywhere“, it will show some of the best flight deals it currently has to offer. There will come the day when you finally find the perfect deal and then you can start to plan. Keep your eyes open to see the best.

2. Have no fix date

It’s not as easy as said, cause not many of us can take their vacation whenever they want, and not many have that many days off to do a city trip complete during the working days (which would be the cheapest). But don’t set a save weekend, or month to travel. For example, you realized the flights to Paris aren’t as expensive as expected, so why don’t you check your calendar and select two to four weekends over the next months and see which one is the cheapest. If you take vacation days, think about taking a Monday instead of a Friday (maybe start Friday afternoon) or instead of Thursday to Sunday maybe Saturday to Tuesday. Try so many different ways until you find the greatest price. And don’t forget to think about traveling in the off-peak seasons. This way you will save the most money. Spinge in Rome or fall in Lisbon doesn’t really sound that bad.

3. Look for cities close by

Perfect, you just decided to go to Paris in spring and at the same time you realized, Brussels isn’t that far away? Than head over to goeuro.com or rome2rio.com and find out how to come from A to B, how long it takes and how much it costs. Is the price in your budget and the time of the journey ok for you, why don’t you extend your trip for 2 days and kill two birds with one stone? If your itinerary includes more than one stop, don’t forget to check which direction will be the cheapest.

4. Compare Compare Compare

Airplane, Bus or Train? Rather Lufthansa than airberlin? You can compare the best flights on Skyscanner, Momondo and Opodo. Momondo offers you, to choose your flight time by yourself (timetable). Don’t forget to find out about the packing information. When I had a layover and changed the airline I had to suddenly pay for Luggage.

5. Don’t forget the airline

You found the perfect flight and now you get transferred to an unknown booking side? Get more infos about it on google, look for „Flight booking with _____. Experiences“. This way you can find out if it is safe to book with this company. Important is to check the same flight at the homepage of the airline.. Often they have them for the same price but you don’t need to pay the service fee there. It can save up to 100€ and more.

6. Visit friends

It doesn’t always have to be chic Paris or bobbly London to broaden your horizon and get rid of the travel bug. Maybe you have a friend in Sweden or an old colleague at the other side of your country? Why don’t you go there? If you visit your friends you really get to know the country / city and don’t have to be ashamed to ask a question to much. Maybe there is another bigger city close by? This way I visited Denmark for my first time. I stayed at my friends place in Odense and I asked her so many questions about her home country (I’m total fascinated by Scandinavia – and Denmark ;) ) and since I already was in the country it was clear for me to go to Copenhagen (my dream). I have another friend there and she invited me to stay at her place, so I could cultivate my friendships and tick of another „To-Go“ of my itinerary.

7. Read Ratings

If you read the ratings before you book, you can save a lot of trouble, this way you can save a lot of money. Is the hotel clean and in a good location? Do they offer breakfast? (Saving money again)? Has it a good Price-performance ratio? I prefer booking.com for Hotels.

8. Choose ONE criteria which is important for you

I always choose a good location – and no matter what, if it has a roof top terrace I always go for that. It’s something different for everyone, you might look for a huge hotel room, or a hotel with Spa. You definitely should choose one and look exactly for that. If you look with out any filter, you might look for ever and if you have to much you are looking for you might need to pay more. Look for one thing and maybe you have luck and you’ll find the perfect place for you. Ps.: A good Location always saves you (a lot) money on location.

9. Say NO to a Hotel and YES to international friends

Hotels often cost twice as much as a Hostel. If you try to save at the Hotel, you might end in a suburb and find yourself next to a broken air condition. Hostels are super In and because of that you can find them everywhere and they look amazing and so trendy. There is always the perfect Hostel for you. It feels great to have a breakfast on the terrace alone between many or sit all night on the porch and get to know new friends. People you meet in Hostels are the most interesting people. They often already travel for months and don’t plan to stop anytime soon. They have so much to tell and if you stay in contact you already have a host for Number 6 here. Win-Win-Situation.

10. Check how to get to the Hotel before you arrive

Very important to check this before you start traveling. Most big cities offer shuttle busses (Which you need to book sometimes in advance), you can also take the public transportation to the city centre. If you try to find a way to leave the airport/trainstation/harbour before you arrive you can save a lot of money. Usually you are totally exhausted when you arrive and try to get away as fast as possible and jump into a taxi and pay up to 100€ more.

As example I wrote you quick down how I created my trip Hamburg-Kiel-Odense-Copenhagen-Malmoe.

Early 2014 I looked for some flights to Hamburg. I just wanted to see what they cost cause it was a dream destination of mine. And surprise, it was cheaper than I thought. So why not? At this point the planning and the thoughts started.

„I have a good friend in Kiel, why don’t I visited her? But wait, Kiel isn’t far away from Denmark anymore. Let’s check what the trains costs and how long does it take? Wow that’s cheap. I guess I will see a friend in Odense there. I really miss her. Oh and when I’m already there, why don’t I go and finally see Copenhagen! I got to know two girls from Copenhagen at a Surfcamp in Portugal. I had so much fun with them and they already invited me before to come and visit them! Oh and if I’m already in this area I can also do a day trip to Malmoe in Sweden. A colleague of mine was there last week for work and was totally in love with it. I definitely include that.“

This way my idea got alive. So after my friends told me my planned dates where perfect and after that I could convince one of my closest friends to go to Hamburg with me to see the musical „The Lion King“. I booked the flights and trains and wrote down all the addresses and where I will meet them.

So as you can see, this trip wasn’t really planned before. It was just the perfect time to look for flights.

In June/July I have another big trip to Asia planend and I will book it just the way I wrote down here. But the best will be Number 6 cause I will finally see my girl Samantha again in Taipei. I got to know her in a Hostel in San Diego (Number 9) and since then we are always in contact, since two years.

  2. Michael Huxley

I think a lot of pre planning but having enough time to stay flexible when you are there is the key to having a cheap budget break.

    • worldsessed

Hotels and Flights are so much more expensive when you book them spontanous, so I think pre planning is the best to travel cheap. But travelling spontanous is awesome, as lons as you can afford it :) Will do it next year ;)

  3. Tim

You are right. Travel does not have to be a major expense if you don’t want it to be. Travel slow and on the cheap gets you just as many cool experiences, possibly more, than spending loads of money.

Excellent tips! I think just going and looking for deals while you are there seems to work well for us. Once we went all the way to Easter Island, because the fares were just too good to pass up!

  5. Melody Pittman

Great tips, especially to look for a close by city and maybe connect from there. I never thought about that one before.
